Ben was not able to get away for our planned dive at The Leap so I stayed at Bare Island for a second dive. I wanted to find more pygmy pipehorses.
I got in on the northern side of the island, descended and swam along the sand, over the outboard motor, over the ledge and along the sand next to the boulders. I was checking out the rocks and algae on the sand for pygmies when I found a small male pygmy pipehorse on one of the rocks. While I was watching it I noticed a smaller one (perhaps a female) around 10 centimetres away.
I continued on again checking all the possible holdfasts for pygmies but did not find any more until I got to the area we'd seen two earlier. One was still on the metal skeleton and the other was near the little yellow sponges.
I didn't go any further down the slope and turned and headed back the way I had come, stopping at the first two pygmies on the way back.
I followed the sand all the way to the exit doing my safety stop along the way. I exited just to the west of the ramp. |
