This is not really a DIY project, but is an example of where non-aquarium related products can be used for an aquarium with significant savings. Specialised aquarium lighting can have a much greater cost than the equivalent equipement purchases from electrical wholesalers, specialist lighting stores and hydroponic shops.
This 150W MH luminare and control unit is identical to the Astral Shoplighter manufactured by Sylvania.
The luminare is fully enclosed and includes tempered UV glass. It takes double-ended 150W MH lamps with RX7s-24 based. It comes already wired to the control unit.

The control unit for the lamp is manufactured by TRIDONIC.ATCO. It contains an ATCO OMS150 magnetic ballast, ATCO AZRM1.8ES ignitor and a 20 F capacitor across the line input. The ignitor in the control unit requires the lamp be less than 1m from the control unit.
