The southerly wind was having a greater impact on the conditions at Bare Island than the easterly swell. This made it difficult to get in on the eastern side of the island as we had planned so instead we got in on the eastern side of the bridge on the mainland side. It was quite protected here and the entry was easy. We descended and followed the rock reef around to the south looking for the anglers we'd seen previously. The visibility was not great but OK considering the surface conditions. There was also a bit of surge. John suggested I look around a certain area, although I wasn't sure what I was looking for. Nevertheless, I found an undescribed angler. We continued on and Karolyn pointed out another undescribed angler. I was hoping to find the spot where Nick had previously shown us pygmy pipehorses but I was a little disoriented coming from the wrong direction and with the poor visibility. We continued on to the swimthroughs and I was hoping to find the two anglers we'd seen there previously but they have moved on. Past the swimthroughs we turned around and headed back. I was much more comfortable heading north as it was a lot more familiar. I was able to find the orange form undescribed angler that Nick had shown us two weeks earlier, although it had moved to another rock. As we moved north I was looking out for the rock Nick had shown us with the pygmy pipehorses. Eventually I found it and a quick look revealed the same white pygmy pipehorse we'd seen before. It was a bit difficult to photograph because of the surge and there was a lot of particulate matter floating around but I was happy to not only find the rock again but find the pygmy pipehorse on it. I couldn't find the second one. We continued north and I exited at the entry point. |
