Today's dive was to take a 2nd year Marine Biology student from California for a dive. He could only dive today and tomorrow but we were in the middle of a east coast low event and the swell on the coast was huge. Clifton Gardens would be one of the few places we could dive.

Nick had gear problems. First the hose to his integrated Suunto Cobra computer was leaking so we had to remove it before the dive. He had a Oceanic transmitter on his first stage and an Oceanic Atom 3.1 dive computer with a brand new battery so we knew he'd be fine. We initially got in at the beach, descended and swam out under the pier. Nick got my attention to tell me his Atom 3.1 was flooded. We swam back to the beach and I took it back to the car.

For our second attempt at the dive we walked along the pier and down the steps and got in there. We descended and swam under the pier. I was mindful that Nick had no SPG or computer so we'd stay shallow and keep the dive short. Plus with all the time we wasted before the dive we'd hit Nick's deadline of getting back to the hotel before 1pm.

We swam under the pier right to the end. I pointed out the pineapplefish which Nick initially didn't see as he wasn't close enough the bottom.

We headed up under the pier, swimming across the pier from side to side looking for animals. I pointed out seahorses, cuttlefish, octopus and pipefish.

We then swam out over the sand to the west and saw more pipefish and blennies in bottles. We headed north to the net and then east along the net and did another pass under the pier before heading back under the pier to the beach where we got out.
