Feeding

Fish

My fish receive two main feedings per day, one in the morning and one in the evening. I try to feed late enough in the morning that all the fish (such as the wrasses) are awake and early enough in the evening that they are still awake. Of course, work and other activities get in the way and I feed when I can. I may do supplemental feedings of dried foods such as flake or pellets.

For the main feedings I use frozen foods, usually one minced marine "meat" and either brine shrimp or mysids.

After the main feedings, I place a square of food in the fridge to thaw in time for the next feeding.

Corals

The corals are fed every few days, with the Tubastraea being fed nearly every second day. They are feed with either left over minced marine "meats" or with thawed frozen mysids or brine shrimp. Feeding is done after lights out with the circulation pumps turned off. The food is squirted directly into the polyps of the corals using a plastic turkey baster.

Minced Marine "Meats"

The staple food for most of my fish is minced marine "meats". I purchase fresh seafood such as shelled green prawns, Tasmanian scallops and squid. I mince each meat in an old style (circa 1930s) hand mincer, producing a thick paste. I put the paste in a plastic bag and roll it with a rolling pin until it is around 5mm thick. This is placed into the freezer and then cut into squares once frozen.
